September is PBC Awareness Month
Because early recognition matters!
Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) is a rare autoimmune liver disease that affects predominantly women. It is characterized by an immune-mediated damage to the small intrahepatic bile ducts.
PBC symptoms can vary depending on the disease stage. While common symptoms in the earlier stage include persistent fatigue and pruritus, later stages can present with jaundice, abdominal pain, sicca syndrome or splenomegaly. However, many patients experience few or no symptoms in the early stages or even during the course of their disease. Over time, PBC can progressively damage the bile ducts in the liver and may lead to serious liver complications.
Because PBC often develops slowly and symptoms can be non-specific, diagnosis may be delayed. That is why awareness matters. The more we talk about PBC, the greater the chance of earlier diagnosis and timely treatment for patients.
We are committed to advancing education, improving care pathways, and supporting ongoing research to help improve the lives of people living with liver diseases.
